1.1 Sediment connectivity framework linking morphology and fluxes

A main challenge for this program is to ‘track and trace’ the sediment: to determine the fluxes and timescales of sediment exchange between smaller-scale elements from inlet to coast and tidal divides. This, in turn, would allow us to explain the sediment budgets that lead to morphological change, including short-term dynamics and long-term accretion or drowning. Morphological change involves local changes of sediment budget and fluxes of sediment that, integrated over time and space, are sediment budgets. All this requires that we know the connectivity, i.e. how, how much and how fast sand and mud move through the system.
